Africana NDT Ghana Limited is a registered, privately owned and independent operating Inspection Company, providing both site and laboratory based Non-destructive Testing Services in Ghana and beyond.
Dye Penetrant Test (DPT) is also known as Liquid Penetrant Inspection (LPI) or Penetrant Test (PT) It is one of the most widely used Non Destructive Test (NDT) methods. It can be used to inspect almost all non-porous materials such as metals, plastics, ceramics etc. We can detect any SURFACE discontinuity (or flaw) by this method such as surface cracks, porosity, pinholes etc.
PT is based upon a natural phenomenon called CAPILLARY ACTION. By the virtue of capillary action, a liquid tends to flow or seep into narrow spaces
(or openings) even against the external forces like gravity. This phenomenon occurs due to the molecular attraction.
With this testing method, the test object is coated with a solution that contains a visible or fluorescent dye. Excess solution is then removed from the surface of the object but is left in surface breaking defects. A developer is then applied to draw the penetrant out of the defects.
With fluorescent dyes, ultraviolet light is used to make the bleed out fluoresce brightly, thus allowing imperfections to be readily seen. With visible dyes, a vivid colour contrast between the penetrant and developer makes the bleed out easy to see. The red indications in the image represent a defect in this component.
